Putting the *ugh* in "rough"

Greetings from the pits of deadline hell! It’s funny, every book is a different experience. I wish I had a formula or “cheat” for writing each book, but alas, each one is different.

Take, for example, the first “Anything He Wants” novel. It was released in serials online, each ranging from 8k-20k words, and was fairly easy to write (despite the sudden popularity, which was stressful for an introvert like me). I had a similarly nice and easy path with “Castaway” – there was a rough patch in the middle where I doubted myself and developed a mad case of burnout that lasted three months – but for the most part the story flowed.

And yet we get to my current work, and suddenly I’m realizing the UGH in “rough draft”. I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember, and I don’t remember a book that’s harder to finish, one that just won’t cooperate. Some books, however, don’t truly come alive until the editing phase. The key is to FINISH, to get to The End, and then you can go make it pretty.

…is it masochistic of me to say I’m eager to dive into this one? ;)

*~*

The gorgeous ladies of S&M Book Obsessions have revealed the cover for the “Unraveled” anthology and it’s SO PRETTY!! My submission to the book is kind of an epilogue to “Castaway”, one last part to the “Anything He Wants” series. Does this mean I don’t intend to continue it? Well, I can’t say that because there are still ideas swirling around my head on how to continue the story, but it does give some closure to a few bits (as evidenced by the Snippet Saturday post I did a week ago). :) Lots more things coming in the future, but for now I’m wrapped up in deadlines, which means I’m stressed, which means I tend to go all ultra-mega-introverted and forget that, hey, there’s a larger world out there!

So if I seem to be ignoring you, PRETTY please don’t take it personally! *hugs*

“FLING” paperback giveaway!!

image

So, who likes free stuff?!

“FLING” is officially available at online booksellers, and the Ebook is already part of several free giveaways around the web. The gorgeous ladies of S&M Book Obsessions are holding a contest ending next week for a Kindle Fire and 10 ebooks (including FLING) to one lucky winner.

Unfortunately it won’t be available in paperback form for another several weeks. In a way I like this as it allows the book to get out as early as possible, without having to wait for any ink to dry.

On the other hand, I heart holding books in my hand.

So I’m going to give away the only paperback of “FLING” that I currently have to one lucky reader, along with a $25 Amazon gift card. I’m starting up a mailing list that will let me keep readers informed of new releases as they go live, as well as exclusive excerpts and news I may not want to release publicly yet. All you have to do is sign up and you’re entered in the drawing.

I’m really hoping to get more paperbacks from the publisher soon, and if I do then I’ll add more copies to the drawing. For now, the prize is 1 signed copy of “FLING” plus a $25 Amazon gift card. All list members are eligible, and the contest will run from today through Monday, July 8.

Good luck!!!

Lauren Jameson talks serials!

AllSix

Amidst the wonderful rush of writing AHW2, trying to unpack from a month-long jaunt into the desert, and psyching myself up to edit a certain BDSM anthology story, I asked my buddy Lauren Jameson/Hawkeye to write me a guest blog post. The story of how I met Miss Lauren is funny and sheerly happenstance, but she’s become one of my best buds (despite her being thousands of miles away in Canada!) and we chat via email or iMessage daily. She also has a new serial out and this is her journey into that particularly awesome format:

Sometimes fate is delightful. Here’s the story behind that opinion.

Early last year, I was contacted by my Avon/ Harper Collins editor and asked if I would be interested in taking part in another anthology, this one with a spring break theme. She said that they had one other author lined up, and her name was Sara Fawkes. I had been under deadline, and was still working my day job. My response was “Sara who? Well, doesn’t matter; I’m sure she’s great. Sure, I’m in.”

Fast forward to July, the RWA conference in Anaheim, California. My two roomies came back from their dinner and said “Guess what just happened? We were eating at the Cheesecake Factory, talking about writing, when this sweet lady came up and shyly asked if we were with the conference. Then she told us about her mind blowing journey of self publishing her serial.”

Serial, I thought? What’s that? I thought that *might* make me sound dumb, though, so I kept that question to myself and instead asked “What’s her name?”

“Sara Fawkes.”

AHW novel contest!

Contest time!

It’s been a long time since I checked in here – too caught up in vacationland apparently – so I think I owe my faithful readers something special. I finally heard back from my publishers who weathered (and continue to recover from) Sandy’s might; everyone is alright, although some have a bigger mess to clean up than others. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone affected by the storm, hope you also came through okay! So it was a bit delayed but, holy cow, they sent me something FULL of win.

ARC’s and final copies of “Anything He Wants” the novel!! ****SQUEE****

(The video that made my parents cry)

Time is ticking down to the “official” release date of November 27, and with the book due out in stores soon (and with the rushed schedule the book’s had in comparison to most other publications) there’s not much time to do promotions or other kinds of marketing.

That’s where my readers come in. ;)

It’s been you wonderful people who’ve made this book so big, and I’m asking you to help me one more time. This contest will run for almost two weeks, ending on the official release date of November 27 (see below). I have two book copies and two ARCs (Advance Reading Copy), but want to keep one ARC so there will be three (3) winners, randomly selected from all the entries. The winners, in the order they were picked, will have the option to receive a signed ARC or signed final copy of “Anything He Wants” novel.

The (simple) rules for this contest:

Bloggers: Blog about the release. Whether its a review of the series or simply a note on your blog that the book is coming out, along with the Amazon/B&N/etc link to the novel page. Send me the link to your blog post, and your name will be put into the pot. The more times the release is mentioned (in individual blog posts), the more times you’ll be in the drawing.

Tweeters (Twitter): Same thing (albeit with less words). Tweet the link to your followers, putting “@sarafawkes” and “#ahw” inside so I can keep track. Again, the more tweets the more times your name is in, but try not to spam – once or twice per day is enough.

Facebook: This one is tough. I’ve never delved into FB deep enough to know how to tag a person in a post, but if you can let me know on this blog comments area when you posted something to your Friends, I’ll add you to the list. If any of you wonderful folks can explain an easier way to track, I’ll love you for life!! :D

Despite the fact that the AHW novel is only slated so far for a US release, I will accept global entries. Before SMP took over, the story had an international audience (and hopefully soon it will again) and it would be super silly to bar you from receiving a copy. So as long as you have an address accessible by post, you’re in!!

The various URLs for the books:

Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00940L0II

Barnes and Noble: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/anything-he-wants-sara-fawkes/1110205464

Let the games begin!!

EDIT: Because I’m stuck here in the Great White North until early December, I’ve decided to extend the contest until December 7 when I return. More time to get your entries in (and the word of this release out!). :D
